Creative Hibernation

Creative Hibernation

Slowing down is essential for creatives.

Happy New Year dear creative souls! I'm full of exuberance and optimism for the New Year!

I don't know about you but 2019 was a very creative yet INTENSE year - so many moving parts and a tremendous amount of energy expended to make it all happen. The biggest milestone for me personally was launching my new e-course FLY FREE (more about this mixed media art class below). I know you're going to LOVE IT! I also graduated from Make It In Design, learning all about surface pattern, which was great fun. My designs were approved for the competition held by the UK based company Wraptious and transformed into the lifestyle goodies below. I didn't win the competition but out of 3457 entries, I got a special mention by the company so I'm very happy about that. Moreover, inspired by Wraptious' work ethic, starting in 2020, I will plant a TREE for every original painting, e-Course or print you purchase off my site!

New offerings are on the horizon and I'd really appreciate your valuable feedback to help me support you with your dreams and goals for the New Year. Scroll down for more!

I'm really looking forward for my cushions to arrive!  What do you think?  I'd love your feedback on the following question:

Would you want one/all of these cushions in your home?

  1. I love all of them, where can I purchase them?!

  2. I love the floral designs.

  3. I love the raptor designs.

  4. I prefer the abstract design.

  5. Not for me but I know someone who would love them.

  6. I don’t like any of them.

Overall, 2019 was jam packed full of learning new skill sets and journeying into new territory, which was all very exciting but at times quite exhausting. Come December, and I was working furiously to get everything done before my children arrived for the holiday season. It took me a while to slow down and allow myself a well deserved break!

Winter is a time to curl by a blazing fire, rest and allow space for new creative ideas to emerge in their own time.

There's a lot of hype around setting New Year resolutions and most of us set unrealistic goals then beat ourselves up when we can't carry through with them. My wise son reminded me that our dreams don't manifest overnight. It's the small daily steps we take towards our big visions that bring them to life. We just have to continue to show up for the process. Transforming our aspirations into reality takes dedication, discipline and diligence. You've also got to love what you're doing to stay the course! With the help of my son, I was able to usher in some semblance of order to my numerous swirling thoughts and plans for the New Year by breaking down my big goals into small chunks of daily manageable tasks. Only then was I able to take a deep breath, relax and trust the process. Our children really are our greatest teachers!

While out for a walk on a crisp December morning, the leafless trees caught my attention. Apparently lifeless and barren, the trees are actually brimming with unseen life force and energy. I was reminded to be in step with the seasons. It is winter after all - a time to curl up by the fireplace with a good book and a mug of your favourite steaming hot drink. By slowing down, you create a placeholder, inviting new ideas and dreams into consciousness. There's a quiet voice within each of us that will point us in the right direction. Experience has taught me time and again that this voice is our true compass in life. It will guide us on our way.

Curling up with a steaming hot drink and relaxing in the cold winter months is so important for us creatives.

I received Beth Kempton's new book Calm Christmas at a timely moment. Beth seemed to address what I was struggling with in the first half of December spot on. Things always show up just when you need them - synchronicity again! She motivated me to start the New Year on a different footing. As Beth puts it, "perhaps we would be better off committing to languid dreaming, to ongoing nurture and care, and to acceptance of the fact that it's okay to wait a while before launching into something new. Maybe we would be better served by moving gently into January with grace and hope..." I also liked her approach to resolution making - that is to envision your big plans and ask yourself how would it feel to live that dream?

So my friends, what are your dreams for the New Yeat? How do you want to feel in this new version of yourself? You may find this article helpful for effective time management. Check it out by clicking below..

Quote of the month

'The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.
